The 2012 public policy priorities include:
Jobs & Economic Growth
Best Buy supports efforts aimed at helping encouraging job creation - vital to economic growth
and recovery. As a job creator in every state, we support efforts that promote employment and a
competitive workforce.
Internet Sales Tax Collection Fairness (“E-Fairness”)
Best Buy strongly supports legislation allowing states to update their tax codes for 21st Century commerce and bring fairness to today’s retail marketplace. Current law - created before
e-commerce existed - prohibits states from requiring sales tax collection from retailers without a
“physical presence” in that state, giving online-only retailers a significant competitive advantage
on price. E-commerce is an important and growing selling channel for consumers and retailers,
representing nearly 10% of all retail purchases and over $250 billion in consumer spending.
Businesses like Best Buy and other in-state merchants, which make significant investments in
local property, payroll and philanthropy, seek a level playing field to compete.
Connectivity
At Best Buy, we believe that access equals opportunity. Best Buy strongly supports efforts to make
broadband available and accessible for all Americans, which will help communities and families
connect to resources they need, spur the development of jobs and innovation, and drive competition
in the marketplace.
Energy & Environment
Best Buy supports policies that promote the responsible recycling of electronic waste and
encourage energy efficiency in design and sale of products. Consumers currently recycle more
technology through Best Buy than any other retailer: its comprehensive programs collected 83
million pounds of electronics and 73 million pounds of appliances in 2010, and the company has
established an ambitious goal to collect 1 billion total pounds of electronics by the end of 2014.
